How a simple question sparked a movement
"Where does my money actually go when I buy this?"
It was a question born out of frustration. Standing in a grocery store aisle, trying to choose between two nearly identical products, wondering which company deserved support—and realizing there was no easy way to know.
Sure, you could spend hours researching. Read news articles, dig through NGO reports, check political donation databases, cross-reference labor violations... but who has that kind of time while trying to buy cereal?
That's the moment Consumer Transparency Collective was born.
From concept to reality
Recognizing the gap between consumers' values and their ability to shop accordingly, we envisioned a technology solution—AI-powered brand analysis accessible from your phone.
We developed Defund Whatever—our flagship mobile app—leveraging AWS Bedrock Claude Sonnet 4 for real-time image analysis. Months of testing proved the concept: 98% accuracy, sub-3-second response times.
To ensure mission integrity and nonprofit transparency, we're filing for 501(c)(3) status. This guarantees our work remains free, accessible, and uninfluenced by corporate interests.
Coming Soon: App store release for iOS and Android, marketing campaigns, and expansion of our brand database to 1,000+ companies.
The Future: Chrome extension for online shopping, additional apps focused on specific industries, partnerships with consumer advocacy organizations, and international expansion.
Mission over profit, always
We chose the 501(c)(3) nonprofit structure for three critical reasons:
For-profit companies face pressure to maximize shareholder value. As a nonprofit, our ONLY obligation is to our mission: empowering consumers with corporate transparency. We answer to the public, not investors.
We don't accept corporate sponsorships. We don't sell ads. We don't have investors demanding growth at the expense of accuracy. Our ratings are independent, period.
Corporate transparency shouldn't be a luxury. By operating as a nonprofit, we can keep our tools free and accessible to everyone—regardless of income or location.
This structure also enables tax-deductible donations, foundation grants, and volunteer contributions—allowing us to grow sustainably while staying true to our values.
Walking the walk, not just talking the talk
We don't just advocate for corporate transparency—we model it. Our financials, methodology, and governance are public. We document our mistakes and how we fix them.
We analyze brands across progressive AND conservative values. We serve users of all political persuasions. Transparency benefits everyone, not just one side.
Where possible, we open-source our code. We share our methodology. We publish our data sources. Transparency thrives in openness.
We don't build in a vacuum. User feedback shapes our roadmap. Brand corrections come from our community. Together, we're stronger.
Our vision for the future
Defund Whatever is just the beginning. We're building an ecosystem of transparency tools:
But we can't do this alone. We need:
Will you join us?
Every movement starts with people who care. Will you be one of them?
